Which areas need clearing?
A driveway, the path to the front door and steps are separate parts of a snow-removal request. Name the areas you want included rather than assuming that “clear the driveway” covers every entrance. Say whether you need a one-time visit considered or want to discuss a seasonal arrangement.
- Property: give the city or ZIP and identify the driveway, private path, steps or other access area.
- Surface and condition: note concrete, asphalt, pavers or gravel if known, plus uneven edges, recent installation and previous damage.
- Access: describe gates, slopes, parked vehicles and narrow sections. Approximate dimensions help; label them as estimates.
- What matters most: identify the entrance or route you need usable and your preferred timing. A requested time still needs confirmation.
You do not need to choose a plow, blower or other method before asking. The suitable equipment and whether the business can accept the job depend on the property.
Agree on the snow plan before comparing prices.
Ask for a written description of the work and how a visit is triggered. A low per-visit number tells you little if the proposals cover different areas or different amounts of work.
| Clarify | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| When work starts | Do I request each visit, or does an agreed snowfall threshold trigger it? How is timing communicated? |
| Areas and boundaries | Exactly which driveway sections, paths and steps are included? What remains outside the scope? |
| Snow placement | Where can cleared snow be placed without blocking the access I need? Are hauling and relocation excluded? |
| Further visits | What happens if snow continues, drifts back, or a street plow leaves a ridge at the entrance? Is another visit a separate charge? |
| Ice treatment | Is treatment included, optional or excluded? Which material is proposed for my surface? |
| Price and changes | Is billing per visit, per storm or seasonal? What accumulation, extra work, cancellation or material charges can change the total? |
These are terms to confirm, not a promise that every arrangement is available. Use the written-estimate coverage checker if you have two proposals to compare.
Snow clearing and ice treatment are different decisions.
Tell the business about nearby planting, the pavement material and any newly poured concrete before agreeing to a deicer. UMD explains that careless or excessive deicer use can damage plants, metal and concrete; sodium and calcium chloride are particularly damaging to new concrete. Follow product directions and any care instructions for the surface rather than choosing a product by “pet-safe” or “eco-friendly” wording alone.
Maryland prohibits using lawn fertilizer to melt snow or ice. See UMD's Maryland deicing guidance and MDA's fertilizer rules. Ask which treatment is proposed, why it suits the site, and whether later ice checks or return treatments are part of the agreement. Clearing does not guarantee that a surface will stay ice-free.
Prepare the property details while they are visible.
Before snow covers them, note driveway edges, low fixtures, drains and plants close to the clearing area. Discuss how the business wants these marked, where vehicles will be parked and how it will reach agreed areas. Keep a simple sketch or ground-level photos for a later conversation; photos are not required by the request form.
If an HOA, landlord or property manager arranges snow work, check which areas are already covered before requesting a duplicate service. Identify whether the concern is your private access or a public road; this request is for property-service help, not a public-road report.

Include your location, the areas and surfaces involved, whether ice treatment is needed, and the timing you hope for. Mills Yard Guide reviews your details and may contact you about them. With your permission, relevant contact and project information may be shared with a landscaping service provider to respond.
Submitting does not book a visit or arrange an emergency response. Acceptance, timing, scope and any return visits must be confirmed with the service business.

Reviewed October 2026. Maryland Extension and MDA support the material-use guidance above. Estimate questions help define the job; they do not establish a local average price or available storm-response schedule.
For leaves still covering the property before winter, plan leaf cleanup separately from snow and ice work.
